Picasso and Dora: A Memoir (Phoenix Giants) Customer Review: Be a fly on the wall!
If you are interested in Picasso, Paris in the 1950s, and the weird and wonderful encounter between a young gay American writer and the ex-mistress and model of Picasso, Dora Maar, this book will make you feel as if you are there.
It is a wonderfully-written account of an almost-love affair between a sensitive young gay man and a rather over-bearing, older, fascinating French woman. The suspense is amazing. The reader jumps between being on Dora’s side and James’s side. But he will be hypnotised by the story and its French background, so well-described and so readable.
Picasso too, their one friend in common, comes across very vividly.
Without seeming to, this book teaches more about art and artists than any textbook ever could. It also describes very sincerely and touchingly how a love-affair can be so devastating, even without being (or because of never being?) consummated.
Customer Review: Treat yourself and travel through the nostalgic 1950s Paris
James Lord offers a personalised account of his early travels in Paris. As an american serviceman, he came to Europe open-eyed and in search of fame. He sought out Picasso, who viewing him as a young quirky american, admitted him into the ‘precarious Picasso circle’. Lord was fascinated by Picasso and revered him. Through this association, Lord befriended Dora Maar. He paints a beautiful picture of the changing relationship between himself (Lord) and Picasso, the crumbling relationship between Picasso and Maar and finally the growing relationship between himself and Maar. The book reveals the strength of Dora Maar, presenting her as a dignified and stalwart woman. It also portrays Picasso as a great artist, but emotionally petty, weak and pathetic.
