For anyone with any interest at all in Picasso - this DVD is filled - and I mean FILLED with information, paintings, sculptures, photographs and films. Almost lovingly narrated by John Richardson who knew the master, and through interviews with Picasso’s children, grandchildren and more the viewer is treated to a surprisingly personal and insightful biography of the man, his works, his influences and inspirations. A lot about the women in his life as well, the source of inspiration for many of his works. One thing the documentary does well is take you to the places where he lived and worked - and one can see how these locations affected and influenced the art as well. A treat - highly recommended.

I can’t imagine a DVD set being more complete. It details his personal life as well as huge amounts of art, and how the two mingle. With interviews of friends, shots from places made famous (like 4 Cats), and work I’d never seen before, this documentary is a masterpiece. I’ve watched it over and over; it’s like a live-action coffee table book. If you like Picasso, this is the most valuable and substantial thing you can own.

Awful awful film. This is only for real cinema buffs with a lot of time on their hands. I have made attempts to grow an appreciation of this type of film but would rather watch the snooker and/or paint dry than have to watch this film again.

Immoral Tales is one of Borowzcyk’s masterpieces, though it does not reach the heights of La Bete or L’ile d’amour. Borowczuk’s style is distinctive: subliminal, insinuative imagery, slow build-ups leading up to explosive finales in which sexuality and (often) violence run wild, excellent scores and respectable acting, an amazing use of colour. All this amounts to much more than softcore pornography. Borowzcyk’s achievement far surpasses the level of Emmanuelle and by far outstrips the likes of Franco and Brass.

The Mystery of Picasso Like a matador confronting a bull, the artist approaches his easel. As he wields his brush, the painting dances into being before our eyes. Pablo Picasso, the most influential artist of the 20th century, is making art, and famous French director Henri-Georges Clouzot (Diabolique, The Wages of Fear) is making a movie. This entirely new kind of art documentary captures the moment and the mystery of creativity; for the film, the master created 20 artworks, ranging from playful black-and-white sketches to widescreen color paintings. Using inks that bled through the paper, Picasso rapidly created fanciful drawings that Clouzot was able to film from the reverse side, capturing their creation in real time. This monumental and over the top film is an absoluter must for cinema’s lovers, art students and all kind of people.

This is a great movie for anyone who has ever wondered how a real work of art is created. Watch as Pablo Picasso creates works in color, black and white, paint, and ink.
The only aspect of the film I did not enjoy was the soundtrack. It does not fit the action on screen and is sometimes unnecessarily loud.
