Paris Was a Woman In the early decades of the 20th century, Paris was the undisputed artistic capital of the world. Cultural titans Gertrude Stein, Colette, Djuna Barnes, painter Marie Laurencin, publishers and booksellers Sylvia Beach and Adrienne Monnier, and New Yorker journalist Janet Flanner (not to mention Ernest Hemingway, Pablo Picasso and James Joyce) were all part of the between-the-wars Left Bank inner circle. Utilizing groundbreaking research, newly-discovered home movies and intimate storytelling that intertwines interview with anecdote, this award-winning documentary re-creates the mood and flavor of a unique female artistic community who flocked to the City of Lights during its most magical era. This Edition features rare home movies of Stein, Alice B. Toklas and Picasso.
Customer Review: Could have been longer?
I think it’s quite fascinating to look at a time when most of us weren’t even thought of. The world of Paris for women brought new challenges to reinforce their equality. Of course, most of the women here led complicated love lives mostly with each other in the literary salons of Natalie Clifford Barney and Gertrude Stein. The deleted scenes are worth noting the relationship between Ernest Hemingway who was actually Gertrude’s gopher. While they were some of the smartest women including the legendary Janet Flanner, they still had remarkably difficult love lives on the side. We only see a portion of their lives. This documentary actually focuses in between wars. Don’t think they had it all easy. Alice B. Toklas was left penniless by the Stein family. Alice was cared for by Catholic nuns because of her plight. Nancy Clare Cunard died alone in a Paris hospital. Djuna Barnes became a Greenwich Village recluse. Janet Flanner had three women who vyed for her love. Solita Solano was her partner in living and work. Noel was her American lover in French countryside where she spent summers and weekends in Orgeval and of course, she ended her life with the only woman who was able to care for her. That woman was NAtalia Danesi Murray and I think Janet’s true love was Paris itself. It allowed you to grow and nurtured these expatriates. It was nice to see Dr. Gisele Freund. Although the clips with Shari Benstock could have looked more professional, any it’s worth the price.
Customer Review: Superb! Brings women artists and their era to life
Greta Schiller’s award-winning documentary Paris Was A Woman (1995) explores the extraordinary women, many of whom were lesbian or bisexual, in the Left Bank’s thriving cultural scene between the wars. Through Schiller’s exceptional filmmaking, and Andrea Weiss’s brilliant?research and screenwriting, we come to know the living, complex women who so often stand only as cultural icons: novelists Gertrude Stein, Djuna Barnes, Colette, Natalie Barney, painter Marie Laurencin, photographer Gisele Freund, publishers/booksellers Sylvia Beach and Adrienne Monnier, New Yorker journalist Janet Flanner, singer Josephine Baker, and many others. Schiller also looks at their connection to the male artists of the time, including Picasso (whom Stein discovered and promoted), Joyce (who drove Beach to bankruptcy when she published his then-illegally obscene masterpiece, Ulysses), and Hemingway (who began as Stein and Toklas’s errand boy; we see - and hear - his stylistic debt to Stein).

In a mere 75 minutes, with a spellbinding use of archival photos and film footage, Schiller manages to recreate the mood and flavor of this unique community of women who came to The City of Lights (and Love) from the U.S., England, and every corner of the world. This inspired, and moving, film brings to life their passion both for the arts and for a freedom in their personal lives which still resonates today.

We also get to know the less well-known, but no less fascinating, women of this enclave, who gravitated to the famously different salons of Stein (witty and cerebral) and Barney (wild and sensual). The film draws on groundbreaking research, newly-discovered home movies (there is nothing like actually seeing and hearing Gertrude Stein, both in her public and private personas), and intimate storytelling that combines interviews with the people who lived then (Barney’s spry housekeeper of 40 years, Berthe Cleyrerque, is unforgettable, as is Janet Flanner) with contemporary scholars (whose brief remarks, sprinkled throughout the film, are illuminating rather than pedantic). Time and again, Schiller and Weiss manage to find exactly the right photos, footage, and sound clips to reveal these women in their complexity as flesh and blood people who in some cases - such as Stein - shaped the course of modern culture.

Paris Was A Woman is not only superb history, it is also inspired filmmaking. Schiller, who edited as well as directed and co-produced, uses the energy of narrative flow, balancing of viewpoints, juxtaposition of the intellectual and revealingly anecdotal, structural use of period music, and delicious humor to bring alive this world in cinematic, and human, terms.

The DVD, from Zeitgeist, includes many excellent supplemental features, including the complete home movies which were excerpted in the film plus additional footage (of Stein, Toklas, Colette, Picasso, Thornton Wilder, poet Paul Valery, and more), two entire sequences cut from the film (one on Stein and Joyce, the other on Hemingway, Stein & Toklas), and dozens of archival photographs (depicting the lives of the women - one memorable split photo shows Colette dressed as a man on one half and as a woman on the other, as well as their paintings, Djuna Barnes’s own hand-colored drawings from her 1928 book The Ladies Almanack - which satirized her fellow lesbian literati, and much more).

I highly recommend this exceptional film!

Under Fire [1983]
Under Fire was one of a trio of notable films from the mid-1980s about journalists involved in Third World war zones. While certainly a lesser film than Salvador (1986) or The Killing Fields (1984) Roger Spottiswoode’s movie is still a commendable work from a director who later brought a similarly political edge to Noriega: God’s Favourite (2000).

Nick Nolte plays an American photo-journalist covering the civil war in Nicaragua in 1979, finding himself caught in a dangerous and cynical web of duplicity and self-interest, as well as falling in love with fellow American, Claire (Joanna Cassidy). Nolte gradually uncovers the degree of his own government’s involvement with the corrupt regime, and inevitably ends up crossing the line from neutral observer to helping the rebel cause.

Under Fire is in essence a reworking of Casablanca, especially as Gene Hackman’s network newsman proves to be Cassidy’s ex-lover, yet thanks to an intelligent script, strong support from Ed Harris as a mercenary and some genuinely unnerving and frightening scenes of the random chaos of war, it’s one which packs a powerful punch. Jerry Goldsmith’s evocative score is among his best of the 1980s.

On the DVD: Under Fire is presented in an anamorphic 1.77:1 transfer which is very clean and clear with minimal grain. The well-mixed Dolby Pro-logic soundtrack is highly effective, if not so startling as a 5.1 track. Beyond multi-language and subtitle options, the only extra is the original trailer, which is also anamorphically enhanced. –Gary S Dalkin

Customer Review: Taking sides
Under Fire is one of the few mainstream American `political’ movies to emerge from the studio system, but along with Missing it’s probably the best. On one level it grafts a traditional romantic triangle onto its story of American war correspondents in Nicaragua gradually finding themselves drawn to taking sides instead of taking pictures, but at least it’s a convincingly grown-up relationship that allows Nick Nolte, Gene Hackman and a never better Joanna Cassidy to really shine. It’s a shame that Cassidy never got more opportunities like this: a last-minute replacement for Julie Christie, she’s extraordinarily good here. The film also boasts an impressive supporting cast, with a star-making turn from Ed Harris as an amiable but deadly mercenary a standout, although Jean-Louis Tritignant’s deceptively unsubtle CIA man gives him a run for his money (not so much for his performance - his English was non-existent and it’s obvious he’s learned his lines phonetically - but because he has most of the film’s best dialog). Extremely well directed by Roger Spottiswoode with a promise he never really fulfilled, it’s an impressive albeit partisan portrait of a country decaying in the last stages of revolution and also boasts what is possibly Jerry Goldsmith’s finest score (which is saying quite something). Impressive stuff. The DVD’s only extra is the superb theatrical trailer, although it does boast a decent widescreen transfer.
Customer Review: A film with new resonance
Set in civil war torn Nicaragua where the US was propping up the regime of a Dictator (Antonio Somoza) against a popular left wing uprising. Stars Nick Nolte Joanna Cassidy and Gene Hackman. The heroes all make poor choices and are flawed, for both good and bad reasons. The journalists become committed to one side in the conflict, and in this action harm those they wish to support, and yet ultimately an honest piece of reporting does produce change. Thus it addresses the eternal dilemma for journalists who must ask whether to remain passive or become active - record or participate? Now probably - “suppress or report”? Its resonance is the hypocrisy and arrogance of US foreign policy - then supporting South American Juntas through the 1980s and 1990s - and now… It is based upon a true story - the the death of journalist Bill Stewart at the hands of a Nicarguan soldier was filmed by a TV crew and really did change the course of a Civil war - but not before countless “less important” deaths. The film is driven along by an excellent soundtrack, which sucks you in as the tension builds. Weaved in this is an inevitable but credible love story. The leads all give strong performances. I think this film has been rather overlooked - perhaps it said too many things the American public did not want to hear. Better than Salvador. A policitical drama and love story about a murder set in a war! Worth a watch.

Are you quick on the draw? Even harder, can you put a title to someone else’s masterpiece?
Customer Review: Picasso the funniest game around
Picasso is a very simple game to play with few rules, but so much fun. It’s best if you can’t draw too well; the fun is all in the ridiculous suggestions that the other competitors come up with for your drawings. Even ardent Pictionary fans have agreed that this is much better.

Customer Review: Best Overview of Similarities in Creative Lives
Many have written about creativity, but few have considered creativity in the context of a cognitive model. Professor Gardner has added greatly to my understanding of what creative people’s lives are like, by focusing on people from a variety of fields (from politics, to dance, to music, to physics, to poetry). A key lesson for me was that creativity can cause problems for the creative person. Having seen some of the bad habits outlined in this book, we can each see how we can become more creative and also avoid some of the pitfalls. Clearly, creativity can become an obsession, since it turns out to be so pleasurable to creative people. Creative people would clearly benefit from a series of questions that prompt them into considering the relevance and approriateness of their lives. I especially liked how Professor Gardner suggested what additional research should be done. I hope someone is working on these questions, now. I am a business person, and did not expect to learn much that would help in business. I was happily surprised to find that I did. An important lesson is that creative people need the right kind of emotional and social support in order to be most effective in not only creating more, but also in making their creations more useful for us all. I also recommend CREATIVITY IN CONTEXT and CORPORATE CREATIVITY, as good books for business people to read on the subject of creativity. But having read many dozens of books on creativity, I still recommend that you start with this one.
Customer Review: An interesting book examining the creative process.
I found this book to be a very interesting read. As a public educator, I a enjoy books that take me out of the framework or box that I view the learning process. Creative Minds made me examine and understand the creative process over a span of a lifetime and mentally note the types of blockers in the early lives of these extraordinary individuals. The book also emphasized for me the differing intelligences in the human race and the conditions necessary for creative breakthroughs. Creating Minds is an excellent reflective read for public educators

Customer Review: A wonderful insight into real life with Picasso
This book follows the decade or so that Francoise Gilot and Picasso were lovers, and covers their day-to-day lives, their discussions on art, their friends (Matisse, Gertrude Stein, Braque etc) and their children (Paloma and Claude). It’s a wonderful biography, beautifully written and very evocative. You admire Francoise for sticking with Picasso for so long and are amazed at the genius that he was. A great read whether or not you are interested in Picasso and his art.

Customer Review: Fly High
San Francisco is a one of a kind city. I fell in love with the spirit of the city long before I ever visited and once there fell in love with it all over again. There are so many things about the city that people can associate with and although it is quite a bit of a tourist mecca there is much more to the life of the city than meets the eye. It was in this spirit that I approached thiis film, having been referred to it on my last visit where I took an alternative route up and down from Coit Tower involving many, many steps. The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill has a certain charm and naievete much like the city where it was shot. Perhaps San Francisco is the only city in the world where wild birds could bring about a career from nothing from a self-confessed Dharma Bum. Beautifully shot with considerable care and obvious affection for each and every one of the subjects including the humans, this beautiful little movie is full of life and hope. If there was ever a spirit of the sixties it lives on in the tolerance the locals have for the birds and their admirers and perhaps there is a lesson for all environmentalists here in the faceof global warming. It is a beautiful and at once a sad tale and throughout we come to recognise the individual birds almost as people with whom we share some growing up time. If anything it is a film which celebrates the uniqueness of San Francisco and it’s many inhabitants which makes it quite unlike any other city on this earth.
