Picasso & Lump: A Dachshund’s Odyssey

Picasso & Lump: A Dachshund’s Odyssey
One spring morning in 1957, veteran photojournalist David Douglas Duncan paid a visit to his friend and frequent photographic subject Pablo Picasso, at the artists villa near Cannes. Traveling with Duncan was his pet dachshund, Lump. The photographers nomadic lifestyle and his other doga giant Afghan houndhad never suited the jealous and temperamental Lump. So when they arrived at Picassos Villa La Californie that spring day, Lump decided that he had found his paradise on earth, and that he would take up permanent residence with Picasso. Lump was soon immortalized in a Picasso portrait painted on a plate, but this was just the beginning. In a suite of 45 paintings reinterpreting Velsquezs masterpiece Las Meninas, Picasso replaced the impressive hound in the foreground with jaunty renderings of Lump. Fifteen of the paintings are reproduced here, bringing full circle the odyssey of a fortunate dachshund who found his way from reluctant road warrior to furry and elongated icon of modern art.

Customer Review: Beautiful book!
I ordered this for a friend, who has dachshunds and is an artist. Before I wrapped the book, though, I looked through it. It tells a visual story of their special relationship, which is clear in the pictures. I was captivated by the sentiment of the book and looked forward to hearing her response to the book. I recommend this to anyone who loves dogs. Very special!

Customer Review: good pics and little tid bits of info
I really like the pictures and the little tid bits of information about Picasso, Lump and their family

Testament D’Orphee [1960]
Price: ?9.99
Customer Review: Cocteau - Le Fin
It is very hard for me to say a great deal about this movie. I am not a film buff, and as a result anything I do say will necessarily be a.impressionistic and b. highly subjective. All I can say is that this film moved me immensely, and that is why I am trying to set down a few words about it. Jean Cocteau (1889-1963) is a man whose life was so diverse it almost defies delineation. Poet, novelist, dramatist, visual artist and even a boxing promoter, he tried his hand at everything with an astonishing degree of success - perhaps in an attempt to justify his own brash evaluation of himself as “an internationally renowned genius” in the face of charges of superficiality from the Surrealist movement, with which he was once associated and which effectively rejected his art as the work of a dilettante. In my view, this was a judgement seriously flawed by a narrowing of artistic definitions born of the essential small-mindedness of many of the Surrealists, but this is neither the time or the place for this kind of discussion. Le Testament D’Orphee - The Testament of Orpheus is Jean Cocteau’s last film - and making it he knew it would be. In many ways it is the successor of the earlier movie Orphee (Orpheus) - we are treated to a clip from that film at the start - but in other ways it stands alone as an artist’s final take on his work and life. Cocteau stars as himself in the piece, and finds himself brought to book by his characters Death, Heurtebise and the poet Cegeste (all in Orpheus) but the trial sequences, sandwiched between episodes of time travel and exercises in relativity effectively serve as Cocteau’s chance to voice his poetic philosophy. Cocteau’s performance throughout is electrifying in its honesty, and on occasions has the potential to arouse great emotion. In watching, it is necessary for the viewer to suspend his ideas of reality, but this is relative. Le Testament D’Orphee is a glimpse into the mind and heart of a true poet, a modern-day Orpheus, and this review cannot do it justice. Watch the film for yourself and see what magic Monsieur Cocteau weaves for us.

Picasso at the Lapin Agile and Other Plays

Picasso at the Lapin Agile and Other Plays
Ever wonder what it would have been like if wild and crazy Steve Martin had written an episode of “The Twilight Zone”? Well, wonder no more. The zany actor/comedian made playwright rookie of the year with this, the script of his first comedy, set in a bar in 1904 Paris. Two of the regulars, twentysomethings Pablo Picasso and Albert Einstein, argue about the art of physics and the physics of art as they try to impress and bed a pretty girl. And then the space/time/culture continuum ruptures, and they’re joined by a figure from the future who seems to be . . . Elvis Presley! Read for yourself why the show’s been done Off-Broadway and at regionals around the country.

Customer Review: Worth it for Picasso
I think in reality this probably deserves 4 stars, but I love “Picasso at the Lapin Agile” too much to rate it anything below 5. It’s a great read and a lot of fun to act. It’s funny on so many levels - everything from wacky and silly to crude to smart to dry humor down to the very subtle (like having an “e-shaped pie.”… it’s a math joke (pi)). The ideas in it are great, and I especially enjoyed comparing science to art. It’s as much fun to think about intellectually as it is to see the different characters bounce off of each other. It’s the kind of play that reaches everyone differently - especially through the various types of humor.

The other plays are so-so, some better than others. I like them for their read, but it’s harder to see them as plays - perhaps I’m wrong. I liked Floating Lady because of the emotions and intensity I imagined as I performed it in my head. I liked Zig-Zag Woman because it was kind of cute, but I think I expected too much of the ending as I read it, so was a little disappointed. WASP was also somewhat interesting to read and draw ideas from, but as a play in and of itself I didn’t enjoy it very much.

Hope that helps. In the end, just buy it for “Picasso…”

Customer Review: Honestly…
I’ve never read the other plays in this book, so I can only comment on Lapin Agile. This play alone is worth purchasing the volume for. If you are familiar with the other scripts or plays that Martin has written, this will not dissapoint. The pacing is perfect. The humor is amazing. The visitor is hilarious.

Not too many words on each page, and beautiful illustrations, it immediately piqued her interest in this artist. So much so, we looked online to view some of his masterpieces and she has had to give his style a go. Suitable to read a child of at least 5, and the aproximate reading alone level of a 7-8 year old. Painting with Picasso (Mini Masters)

Painting with Picasso (Mini Masters)
New board books in the best-selling Mini Masters series feature beautiful paintings from Cassatt and Picasso and rhyming text introducing budding artists to these famous masters.

Customer Review: Love this series!
This is a great book. I have a newborn and am hoping to expose him to different forms of art and science. This whole series is brilliant.

Customer Review: Not what I expected
The paintings they chose to use in this book are wide ranging in terms of style. The good thing is the paintings are not at all like the super abstract “Demoiselles d’Avignon.” They include very realistic works of a boy on a donkey and a boy on a chair. There is even a self portrait at the end.

I don’t really care for the writing in this one. There really is no story and many of the paintings’ descriptions are just boring. It seemed randomly put together and as if the author didn’t know what to say. Even a couple of the paintings themselves are boring, which is not a word that usually comes to mind when I think of Picasso.

Overall, I think it’s a good book but it’s not going to be for every kid. I think it’s a great intro to Picasso, even if they just leaf through it and look at the pictures.

Immoral Tales [1974]

Customer Review: completely over-rated
Awful awful film. This is only for real cinema buffs with a lot of time on their hands. I have made attempts to grow an appreciation of this type of film but would rather watch the snooker and/or paint dry than have to watch this film again.
Customer Review: Premium erotica
Immoral Tales is one of Borowzcyk’s masterpieces, though it does not reach the heights of La Bete or L’ile d’amour. Borowczuk’s style is distinctive: subliminal, insinuative imagery, slow build-ups leading up to explosive finales in which sexuality and (often) violence run wild, excellent scores and respectable acting, an amazing use of colour. All this amounts to much more than softcore pornography. Borowzcyk’s achievement far surpasses the level of Emmanuelle and by far outstrips the likes of Franco and Brass.

Surviving Picasso After their brilliant collaborations on Howards End and The Remains of the Day, director James Ivory and Anthony Hopkins reunited (along with producer Ismail Merchant and screenwriter Ruth Prawer Jhabvala) for this controversial film about the life and loves of the great artist Pablo Picasso. Hopkins is outstanding in the title role, portraying Picasso as a brilliant, manipulative egotist who used his power over women to fuel his artistic impulse and voracious sexual appetite.

But Surviving Picasso is not intended to be a screen biography and, as many critics noted in mixed reviews, this 1996 film fails to provide any substantial insight into Picasso’s complex personality. It’s more about Fran?oise Gilot (Natascha McElhone), the aspiring artist who was one of the few women to “survive” Picasso’s love and emerge as a stronger, more confident person with a life of her own outside of Picasso’s often destructive sphere of influence. McElhone is impressive in this breakthrough role, conveying the seductive effect Picasso had on women, but also holding her own against the artist’s unpredictable temperament.

Surviving Picasso was based on the unflattering book Picasso: Creator and Destroyer by Arianna Huffington, so the Merchant-Ivory team did not have the cooperation of Picasso’s estate. The result is a film that shifts its focus away from the artist and onto his positive and negative effect on those who entered his inner circle. It’s a fascinating portrait of a fascinating man and his equally passionate lovers, fueled by excellent performances. Even though you know you’re not getting the whole story of Picasso’s best and worst behavior, the movie grabs and holds your attention. –Jeff Shannon
Customer Review: Excellent movie needs a DVD version!
I have looked for this movie for years to come on DVD…but alas it hasn’t happened yet. This movie, which is based on a book, truly shows what it was like to have to live (or ’survive’ as you will) with someone who is egocentric and artistic. I don’t understand why people wanted this movie to explain Picasso as a person…the title tell you its about someone who SURVIVED Picasso. This man didn’t want to be understood. He didn’t care about that so appreciate this movie for what it is, a great example of how someone can almost be ’swallowed’ whole by another larger than life figure but who is able to transcend all that and stand on their own in the end. This movie has so many great aspects to it outside of the acting so I urge people to give this movie a chance because it is a fantastic journey from beginning to end.
Customer Review: Under-appreciated Merchant/Ivory Masterpiece!
If you have seen this film, you would no doubt be able to remember many scenes from this hidden gem. The performances are all top-notch, and why there’s no DVD available is mind-blowing! It’s filled with unforgettable one-liners, great sets and locales, beautiful montages, and the colors are rich and vivid, with perfect flesh tones from start to finish! The print is also very clean, while the overall cinematography is simply oscar-worthy! The casting could not have been better. Just have a look at the real Dora Maar, played by Julianne Moore. Her performance is just hypnotic! Surviving Picasso is about his relationships with the people in his life, and not so much about the history of his career, so it’s not fair to say this film is lacking in that respect. Gilot’s career as an artist is a fascinating one, and should be better known. Natascha McElhone’s brilliant acting does just that! Merchant’s passing should have stirred someone in charge of selecting new dvd releases to do right by both Ishmael and director James Ivory, for their incredible contribution to cinema, with the release of this masterpiece on DVD. The VHS version is crystal clear by the way, so don’t think it’s not worth the purchase. Nertheless, it would be a great addition to any DVD collection.

Customer Review: Bullets,Bombs & Babes Say’s it all
That’s the credo for the series of lighthearted sexy spy spoofs created by Andy Sidaris. If you were a fan of late night cable then chances are you are familiar with his work.A quick review of Andy Sidaris movies.Shot on the cheap, shot quickly, featuring at least a half a dozen Playboy Playmates or Penthouse Pets, studly guys, lots of wild action usually involving guns and or explosives, simplistic if sometimes silly plots, ample nudity and an overall sense of plain fun. This particular 3 disc set features 1988’s Picasso Trigger,1990’s Guns, and 1994’s the Dallas Connection. My favorite is Dallas Connection but Picasso Triggers fun too.Guns is mediocre compared to other Sidaris films.Playboy Playmate Dona Speir stars in Picasso Trigger and Guns while Julie K. Smith and Julie Strain carry the ball in Dallas Connection.I won’t take up much space telling you the plots of the 3 films .The basic gist is Speir and her partners( Hope Marie Carlton or Roberta Vasquez) are agents trying to bust various bad guys trying to destroy the world.Samantha Phillps leads the agents in Dallas Connection and Strain’s Black Widow is their nemises.Chips alumini Erik Estrada is the villian in Guns the evil Rodrigio Oberegon is the villian in Picasso Trigger and Dallas Connection. If you are a fan of campy not to be taken as art cinema I highly recomend any of the Sidaris films( well up until Day of the Warrior where he started losing it).
Customer Review: A mix between Roadhouse and Skinemax and Bond
First off, these movies are completely retarded. They’re ridiculous and are far from being quality films, but that doesnt mean they arent entertaining… I watched Picasso Trigger and had to change my shirt because I spit beer all over myself when watching the motorcycle “chase” scene. 80’s Playmates riding motorcross bikes in tank tops (and no bra’s!) and using an explosive boomerang to take out one of the bad guys is just one of the highlights.

If you’re in to bad dialogue and bad acting, these movies are a gold mine. Seriously — RoadHouse, Stone Cold, Point Break, etc. dont even come close. If the Coen brothers tried to make a bad movie, it’d probably look like these… I just realized that that’s probably an obtuse compliment, even if it may be insulting. Whatever… Where can you get three hilariously lame movies for less than 20 bucks? I highly recommend it.

Customer Review: Best Overview of Similarities in Creative Lives
Many have written about creativity, but few have considered creativity in the context of a cognitive model. Professor Gardner has added greatly to my understanding of what creative people’s lives are like, by focusing on people from a variety of fields (from politics, to dance, to music, to physics, to poetry). A key lesson for me was that creativity can cause problems for the creative person. Having seen some of the bad habits outlined in this book, we can each see how we can become more creative and also avoid some of the pitfalls. Clearly, creativity can become an obsession, since it turns out to be so pleasurable to creative people. Creative people would clearly benefit from a series of questions that prompt them into considering the relevance and approriateness of their lives. I especially liked how Professor Gardner suggested what additional research should be done. I hope someone is working on these questions, now. I am a business person, and did not expect to learn much that would help in business. I was happily surprised to find that I did. An important lesson is that creative people need the right kind of emotional and social support in order to be most effective in not only creating more, but also in making their creations more useful for us all. I also recommend CREATIVITY IN CONTEXT and CORPORATE CREATIVITY, as good books for business people to read on the subject of creativity. But having read many dozens of books on creativity, I still recommend that you start with this one.
Customer Review: An interesting book examining the creative process.
I found this book to be a very interesting read. As a public educator, I a enjoy books that take me out of the framework or box that I view the learning process. Creative Minds made me examine and understand the creative process over a span of a lifetime and mentally note the types of blockers in the early lives of these extraordinary individuals. The book also emphasized for me the differing intelligences in the human race and the conditions necessary for creative breakthroughs. Creating Minds is an excellent reflective read for public educators

Scipio Africanus: The Defeat of Hannibal Customer Review: A Fascist Adventure!
The scene where the Carthaginian queen drinks the cup of poison has to be the most glamourous death scene in film. Eventhough it wasn’t made in Hollywood it probably defines the decadent/femme fatale motif that is Hollywood. It’s almost ritualized the way she takes up the cup — very Kenneth Anger and very Salome. The rest of the film is a sight as well. For students of history, political science or anyone with a fascination with fascism should watch this movie. The constant Roman salutes and brandishing of the fasces are absolute propoganda spectacle! Oh, and the elephants are actually getting butchered.
Customer Review: VICTORIAM AVT MORTEM
“Victory or death!” This is one of the principal themes of Carmine Gallone’s 1937 film: a superb work in which its collosal production is carried by a brilliant direction, a clever screenplay, a tight script, and good acting. The film is also unprecedented in terms of its incredible historical detail. Released in 1937 and backed by Mussolini’s government, this film was the most expensive Italian production of its time with 30,000 extras, 6,000 horses, and 50 elephants. The cinematography is excellent and parallels Reifenstalh’s contemporary works under the Nazi regime in Germany. Unlike German propaganda films of that time however, this film is rather unintrusive in terms of propaganda and carries no racist ideology such as with Goebbels’ films: the historical setting is simply conducive to fascist Italy’s ideology of restoring the nation to the level of its glorious Roman past as desired by Mussolini.

The film is presented from Scipio’s point of view and covers the last part of the Second Punic War where Hannibal retreats from Italy to Carthage with haste to defend his home and fight the final battle of Zama. Hannibal is presented as an honorable foe who, like Scipio, is bound to follow his destiny and serve his nation no matter what the cost. Political intrigue arises when Hasdrubal’s daughter, Queen Sophonisba, uses her seductive charms to coax her Numidian husband Syphax and his rival Massanisa to fight the Romans. The level of historical detail is probably the most faithful than any other film on Roman history. All of the clothing, architecture, military equipment and tactics are presented with exact accuracy. The legions are shown with the proper uniforms, armaments, and tactics of that period. The tactical maniple formations are shown as opposed to the cohort formations of the Late Republic. The quinquireme galleys were produced to exact scale and made fully functional: they also include the innovative hooked and swiveling boarding ramp (corvus) used during that time. The battle scene of Zama is the most impresive and graphic ever presented in a film on antiquity using 50 elephants and replicated at 1/10 the scale with 30,000 actors. The battle scene is extremely graphic even in comparison to modern films with some very violent close quarter combat. This is probably not a film for animal lovers as, unfortunately, some of the elephants were speared and butchered to add realism to the film: Mussolini felt that historical realism outweighed the lives of these poor animals. The English script, written and dubbed in 1937 by an American company, is also outstanding and as stoic as the speeches recited in Livy’s histories on the wars with Hannibal.

Some of the downsides of the film are antiquated acting techniques in which some of the actors are still using theatrical methods prevalent in silent films which don’t really work well with sound films. As a result, some scenes come out as over-dramatic, particularly in the minimal romantic subplots which are fortunately and short and sparing. Shortcomings aside, the lavish sets and cinematography are stunning and remained unmatched until later period films such as ‘Cleopatra’ and ‘Spartacus.’ As a matter of fact, one can see that both Mankievicz and Kubrick were heavily influenced by Gallone’s direction and camera work along with the grandiose sets in this film. This is simply an outstanding film that completely outclasses the later and atrocious ‘Hannibal’ with Victor Mature. This is an excellent film that is a fine addition to any film lover’s collection: particularly for those who are Roman history buffs or scholars of fascism and 20th century propaganda.

On a final note, contrary to the previous reviewer E.R. Curry’s claims, the Roman salute is anything but a fascist invention of the 20th century attributed to Ancient Rome. Jaques Louis David portrayed the Roman salute in his 1792 painting “The Oath of the Horatii” showing the legendary Roman Horatii brothers saluting their father with the Roman salute as they go to war. This painting was completed over 200 years before socialism, fascism, or film ever existed. Fascist ideology in principle seeks to apply the Roman concept of the dictator to modern times in which one’s full allegiance to the needs of the state is imperative above everything else. It is akin to Cincinnatus accepting his appointment as dictator and leaving his farm to fulfill his sworn patriotic duty no matter what the sacrifice may be. The Nazi or fascist salute is therefore a revivance of what was thought to be the original Roman salute as portrayed in David’s painting and other classicist or neo-classicist works of art. Although no one can be certain as to when the Roman salute came into existance and whether it was indeed Roman, it unquestionably came into being long before Mr. Curry claims to have been the case.
